"What you don't know can hurt you." Did you know that many pay per click marketers have low service or set up fees? That's because some companies receive as much as 50% of your pay per click dollar as part of their compensation. To ad insult to injury, these companies are likely to represent multiple clients in a competitive bidding process for ad placement. Bids on keyword can be as low as 10 cents per click or as high as 35 dollars, and more. Sales people are skilled at the art of manipulation. Many times my direct questions about who is comping their company has been deflected by a change of topic. An ethical agent should be working in your interest, without conflict. You know this when there is transparency and the agent is not compensated for your advertisement through anyone other than you. An ethical agent will sign an agreement stating such and make no excuses as to why they can't. Caveat Emptor: be a smart consumer and understand the service you purchase and how those associated with the service are compensated.

Some links can hurt. I have received solicitations about getting my Website on Google page #1, and paying nothing until my site achieves the page #1 position for my keywords. Sounds great with nothing to lose... Cheating the search engines can result in a temporary page 1 listing; for a little while. Google, Yahoo, and MSN (BING) have ethical standards for SEO. Break the rules and you can be permanently banned. Sometimes that page 1 listing can be too good to be true.We recommend that you know who your dealing with and work with someone governed under the same laws as you are. Understand that it is almost impossible to take recourse on an unethical agent outside of your country, where the laws are lax and enforce non existent. You don't have to cheat to win. Just do what most people won't; work a little harder and smarter.

Getting your site to the top of the search results is very important for your Web success. Search Engine Marketing (SEM) comes in two flavors: Organic Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Pay-Per-Click Search Engine Listing (PPC).

Organic Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO uses keywords and phrases within the Web page that describe services or products in an effort to increase the page rank on the search engine results page when that search term is entered. Achieving and maintaining a high page rank is like being in a horse race. Your actions as well as your competitors’ actions will determine your position. However, it is critical to achieve the proper density of keywords and links to achieve a high rank on your Web page.

Pay Per Click Advertisement (PPC)

PPC SEM allows you to buy an advertising spot with a click link to your Web page. The price you are willing to pay for a prospect clicking on a link to visit your site is the determining factor on where your page will rank in the Pay per Click line up. Costs can run from 5 cents per click on up. Charges are incurred when a visitor actually clicks through to your site. Ads can be run nationally or may be restricted to geographic region. Very competitive terms cost more. Sloppy campaign management can waste money by overpaying for an ad position. Third party programs can range from $500 to $1,500 per month to achieve and maintain a top page one position.

What Works? Statistics derived from Google for high ranking sites show that 50 – 70% of visits are the results of search engines, 20 – 38% of visits are direct access via the site URL indicating returning visitors, or the result of some other advertisement (i.e. newspaper).
