Organic Results - The natural listing of websites in search engine's results are called organic or natural listings. These are unpaid and trusted by the majority of searchers as the better sites that are returned from the search. The organic results are ordered in the listing based on the web content and the popularity of the webpage. Organic results sometimes yield local results if the search specified a geographic preference or a geographic preference can be inferred (e.g. "chinese restaurant").

Pay Per Click (PPC) allows you to buy an advertising spot with a click link to your webpage. The price you are willing to pay for a prospect clicking on a link to visit your site is the determining factor on where your page will rank. Costs can run from 5 cents per click on up. Charges are incurred when a visitor actually clicks through to your site. Ads can be run nationally or may be restricted to a geographic region. Third party programs can range from $500 to $1,500 per month to achieve and maintain a top page one position.

A WORD ABOUT PAY PER CLICK AND OTHER 3RD PARTY MARKETING PROGRAMS

"What you don't know can hurt you." How does your pay per click company receive their compensation? Who are they really working for? Some pay per click companies charge a fee to create and market your firm. Others additionally receive as much as 50% of your pay per click marketing dollar as part of their compensation. To add insult to injury, some companies also represent multiple clients who are competitors and pit them against each other in a competitive bidding process for advertisement placement. As they drive up the pay per click bids, they drive up their own compensation. It can get worse as click fraud enters into the equation, where non-prospects are hired to click on PPC ads. Bids on keywords can be as low as 10 cents per click or over $40 for a single click on your ad. The informed consumer should understand how the marketing agent works and how they are compensated.

Search engines use many factors to rank websites. These factors are grouped into 1) onpage (what is on the webpage and how it coded) and 2) off-page elements (links from other web sources). While much is known about how to optimize both groups, the real secrets of SEO are ever changing and carefully guarded.

Links to your website are endorsements that the search engines use in determining where your site appears in their search results. What you should know is that all links are not counted equally. Some links to your site can hurt your status in the search engines. Buying links for the purpose of ranking better is expressly forbidden by the major search engines. Engaging an unethical SEO company or employing prohibited ranking techniques can result in being permanently de-listed from a search engine. The endeavor to acquire links is slow, competitive and laborious. There is much cheating and deception. Even major business listing services, like the yellow pages, employ tactics to block search engines from giving your site a link endorsement. Without credible endorsements which are links that pass page rank, your site cannot rank well on a search engine.

Organic Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO uses keywords and phrases within the webpage that describe services or products in an effort to increase the page rank. Achieving and maintaining a high page rank is like being in a horse race. Your actions as well as your competitors’ actions will determine your position. However, it is critical to achieve the proper density of keywords and links to achieve a high rank.
